Game Story

CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Patrick Lalime made 38 saves and
Shawn McEachern had a goal and two assists as the Ottawa
Senators moved back atop the Eastern Conference with a 5-2
victory over the Calgary Flames.

Ottawa pushed its winning streak to a season-high five games and
moved one point ahead of New Jersey in the East. The Senators
are 8-1-1-0 against Canadian opponents this season.

"It's our goal," Lalime said of the East race. "We want to
finish first in the conference. It's a big battle with all
those teams right behind us, but we just have to keep taking it
game by game."

Alexei Yashin notched a power-play goal 51 seconds into the game
to get Ottawa rolling before defenseman Wade Redden scored on a
long wrist shot at 8:37 for a 2-0 lead. Defenseman Jason York
made it 3-0 in the second period before the Flames finally woke
up.

"Well it always give you momentum, especially on the road,"
Ottawa's Daniel Alfredsson said. "It forces Calgary to move
offensively and we've got a lot of pretty quick forwards up
there. We can use the transition game the way we want it."

Yashin has been one of the hotter Senators of late, producing
five goals and two assists in his last three games. Redden is
also producing with four goals and four assists during a
five-game points streak.

Calgary peppered Lalime with 18 shots in the period and got
goals from rookie Daniel Tkaczuk and defenseman Derek Morris
just over four minutes apart. But the Flames could not solve
the Ottawa goalie the rest of the way.

"It was too big of a hill of climb," Calgary's Cory Stillman
said. "Obviously, when you're playing the best team in the
Eastern Conference, they play good defensively. We had the
opportunity to make it 3-3, but we let it slip away."

Calgary's best chances to tie came late in the third period.
Jarome Iginla had his one-timer from the left faceoff circle
stopped by a sliding Lalime with six minutes remaining, moments
before Tkaczuk failed to handle a bouncing puck in the slot.

"We let them back in probably because we had too many
penalties," Lalime said. "But we shut them down in the third
and we just played a pretty strong third period."

Ottawa put the game away with two goals in the final 65 seconds.
Andreas Dackell scored into an empty net before McEachern roofed
his 13th of the season with 25 seconds left.

Daniel Alfredsson added three assists to help Ottawa defeat
Calgary for the second time this season.

"We've been playing well with a lead," Alfredsson said. "We
knew coming into Calgary, with them playing really well, we'd
need a better start and we were fortunate to score on the first
power play right away."

Ottawa has outscored the opposition, 25-10, during the winning
streak that comes on the heels of a six-game winless slide
(0-4-2-0). The Senators head to Edmonton to finish the
three-game road trip before returning home for three contests.

The Senators won consecutive road games for the first time since
early December and is 10-7-3-0 away from home this season.

Calgary went 1-for-7 on the power play and had a six-game home
unbeaten streak stopped. The Flames lost for just the fourth
time in their last 15 games overall and failed to move to the
.500 mark for the first time since January 29, 2000.

"We know we were within a game of .500, but I think the biggest
thing is we're more or less looking for a playoff spot rather
than .500," Stillman said. "Right now, if we were in sixth
place, we'd be excited about that."

Flames goaltender Fred Brathwaite made 22 saves and saw his
personal six-game unbeaten streak end (4-1-2).

"I thought we played hard enough (to win the game)," Brathwaite
said. "Never count us out until the final buzzer. A lot of
credit has to go to Patrick Lalime tonight."

The Senators have won six of the last eight in the series.
