Game Story
OTTAWA (Ticker) -- Mike Fisher scored the go-ahead goal midway
through the third period and Alexei Yashin had a pair of goals
as the Ottawa Senators edged the Washington Capitals, 5-4.
Fisher scored the eventual game-winner by streaking down the
left wing, skating around Washington defenseman Sergei Gonchar
and scooping a backhand off the post and then between the pads
of goaltender Olaf Kolzig.
"I came down the wing and felt I had a step on him (Gonchar),"
Fisher said. "I was on my backhand and didn't have a great
angle, but just wanted to get the puck on the net. I got a
lucky bounce."
"I let the team down and I will make it up to them," said
Kolzig.
Ottawa goaltender Patrick Lalime made half of his 24 saves in
the third period, keeping the Capitals scoreless over the final
20 minutes.
"We were back to the basics in the third and that's how we win
hockey games," Ottawa coach Jacques Martin said.
Lalime's third-period blanking of the Capitals included stopping
of Adam Oates on a shorthanded breakaway opportunity with 13:45
left and the stoning of Capitals left wing Steve Konowalchuk
with 12 seconds to go.
"The play came from the corner and it was a bit scrambly," said
Lalime. "I saw him turn with the puck and noticed he was a left
shot. Just tried to play the angle."
Despite notching his 19th victory of the season, Lalime has
allowed 11 goals in his last two games. The Senators collapsed
in a 7-6 overtime loss against Los Angeles on Tuesday.
"Sometimes they all come in a game or two," said Lalime. "It's
just the way it goes."
Washington scored four times in a 10 1/2 minute span of the
second period to take a 4-3 lead. Yashin knotted the contest in
the final minute of the middle period, firing a slap shot from
the high slot off the crossbar and in, receiving the feed from
Andreas Dackell.
Yashin has eight goals and four assists in a six-game points
streak.
"I try not to pay attention to that stuff," said Yashin. "My
linemates and I are just finding each other really well right
now. It's a good mix."
Finishing a 3-on-2 break after crisp passing from Adam Oates and
Calle Johansson, Steve Konowalchuk's power-play goal at 9:04 in
the second tied the game, 2-2.
The Senators had taken a 2-0 lead into the first intermission
after Andre Roy and Rob Zamuner beat Kolzig.
After scoring four goals in the last meeting between the teams,
Washington's Peter Bondra was held scoreless.
"It wasn't just me," Ottawa defenseman Jason York said.
"Everyone was to pay special attention to him when he was on the
ice. A guy like that you have to be physical with."
"We had a slow start and made too many mistakes," said Bondra,
who leads the Capitals with 23 goals and 45 points. "They are
too skilled to do that against."
Oates and Johansson had two assists apiece for the Capitals.
