Game Story
OTTAWA (Ticker) -- After surrendering 17 goals in their previous
three games, the Ottawa Senators returned to the form that has
put them at the top of the Eastern Conference.
Rookie Jani Hurme made 18 saves for his second career shutout
and Alexei Yashin scored twice, leading the Senators to a 3-0
blanking of the slumping Tampa Bay Lightning.
Both of Hurme's shutouts have come against the Lightning. He
turned aside 24 shots in a 6-0 victory at Tampa Bay on October
27.
"The last two months I've played only a few games, so it was
nice for me to get a start and great for me to get the shutout,"
said Hurme, who gave Patrick Lalime a rare night off.
Ottawa, which has won seven of its last nine games, outshot
Tampa Bay, 42-18, to remain two points ahead of New Jersey in
the East. The Senators have won all three meetings with the
Lightning this season by a combined score of 17-3.
"We were skating well tonight and able to get in the zone with
some odd-man rushes and we played a physical game on defense,"
Ottawa defenseman Wade Redden said.
Despite dominating throughout, Ottawa was blanked by Dan
Cloutier until Yashin broke through with 8:11 left in the second
period. The Senators took control early in the third as former
Lightning Rob Zamuner and Yashin scored in a 73-second span.
"I felt comfortable and I thought I played well, but it's still
a loss, so I guess it's back to the drawing board," Cloutier
said.
Still without injured captain Vincent Lecavalier, Tampa Bay
suffered its fifth straight loss and has just one win in its
last 11 games (1-9-1-0).
"I think we have a little more skill and depth and they were
missing their key player," Hurme said. "Our guys played well."
After the Lightning fell behind 3-0, Tampa Bay center Wayne
Primeau lost his cool at 6:18 of the third period. After
colliding with Redden, Primeau was upset no penalty was called
and whacked Redden across the ankles with his stick.
The players began pummeling each other, but Primeau refused to
let go when the linesmen stepped in to break up the fight. That
earned him 22 minutes in penalties, including an instigator
minor, a fighting major and a game misconduct for attempt to
injure.
Ironically, Primeau suffered a possible concussion in the
collision, which appeared to be accidental, and was taken for
precautionary X-rays.
"I think he was pretty frustrated," Redden said. "I guess he
lost control a bit."
Ottawa had a chance to take the lead when Daniel Alfredsson was
awarded a penalty shot after being tripped by defenseman Cory
Sarich on a breakaway 8:37 into the second. But he was stopped
by Cloutier.
"I made the right move and got him down and I went to the left
side, but I couldn't get it up over him," Alfredsson said.
The Senators finally got on the board following a faceoff win by
Yashin, who drew the puck back to rookie Karel Rachunek.
Alfredsson took a feed along the boards and passed in front to
Yashin, who flipped the puck over a fallen Cloutier.
"When I have the opportunity, I shoot it," Yashin said. "I want
to continue to work hard, stay focused. There's lots of hockey
left to play this season."
Early in the third period, Alfredsson corraled a loose puck
along the right boards. He passed between the circles to
Zamuner, who skated in and beat Cloutier with a backhander at
2:05.
Just over a minute later, Yashin notched his 20th goal, taking a
pass in the slot from Andreas Dackell and rifling a quick snap
shot to the top left corner of the net.
"He's (Yashin) elevated his game as of late and it's obviously a
big plus for our team," Ottawa coach Jacques Martin said.
