Havlat's late score helps Senators tie Flyers
PHILADELPHIA -- The Ottawa Senators used a little luck to snap the
Philadelphia Flyers' seven-game home winning streak.
Martin Havlat scored a fluke unassisted goal at 7:12 of the third
period to lift the Senators to a 1-1 tie with the Flyers on Tuesday
night.
Havlat's shot from inside the right circle trickled off Philadelphia
goaltender Roman Cechmanek, but Flyers defenseman Kim Johnsson tipped
the puck back into the net with the blade of his stick in a clearing
attempt.
"It was just bad luck," Johnsson said. "I didn't see it. It just
bounced off my skate. I tried to stop it, and Cechmanek tried to stop
it. I guess we weren't fast enough."
Jeremy Roenick scored for the Flyers, who had their eight-game winning
streak stopped with a 5-2 loss in Pittsburgh on Monday.
Ottawa's Patrick Lalime made 42 saves, including a spectacular glove
save on a wrist shot by Roenick with 21.3 seconds left in overtime to
preserve the tie. The play was reviewed by officials, who thought the
puck might have crossed the line, but they quickly ruled it was not a
goal.
"I knew it was in my glove," Lalime said. "People were going crazy, but
maybe they didn't see what happened. The only thing I think was if my
glove went in and out. But it was pretty clear it never crossed."
Roenick agreed with Lalime.
"I was right there," Roenick said. "I saw it. I knew that it didn't go
over."
Cechmanek, who had won his previous seven decisions, had 33 saves,
including a big stop on a backhander from in close by Karel Rachunek
with less than three minutes to go in the third period.
"We competed and played hard," Ottawa coach Jacques Martin said. "But
in the second period, we just had too many turnovers inside the
offensive zone."
Roenick, who leads the Flyers with 49 points, scored at 4:08 of the
second period when he deflected Eric Desjardin's slap shot from just
inside the blue line.
