Game Story

SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- Marian Hossa scored on a breakaway
with 2:06 left in overtime as the Ottawa Senators rallied from a
three-goal deficit to defeat the Florida Panthers, 5-4, and
match a franchise record with their fifth straight victory.

Hossa, who began Ottawa's comeback from a 3-0 deficit in the
second period, intercepted rookie defenseman Lance Ward's pass
in the neutral zone and broke in alone on Trevor Kidd.

Hossa deked Kidd out of position, went to his forehand and
flipped the puck over the fallen goaltender for his fifth goal
in three games against the Panthers this season.

"I was ready to make a deke, for sure," Hossa said. "I was
pretty confident and ready to shoot. I faked between his legs
and went high."

"I got hooked from behind and kind of lost the puck a little
bit," said Ward. "Their guy broke in."

The Senators have had three previous five-game winning streaks,
most recently from January 2-13.

"It feels great," Hossa added. "It builds a big team
confidence. A strong team finds a way to win, and tonight we
did. It was a great game."

Florida defenseman Dan Boyle scored his first goal of the season
on the power play to tie it with 7:21 left in regulation. It was
his fourth goal in 74 NHL games and first since March 26, 1999
against the Washington Capitals.

Alexei Yashin capped Ottawa's run of four straight goals,
scoring his 200th NHL tally and 22nd of the season to give the
Senators a 4-3 lead with 8:52 to go in the third.

Ottawa had an excellent chance to win, but Kidd made a
spectacular glove save on Daniel Alfredsson's blast from the
slot with three seconds left.

"Right now, we've got to pull everything out of the closet that
we can and hopefully, the guys continue to believe and trust
each other," Florida coach Duane Sutter said. "When the momentum
shifts like that, obviously trust starts to slide a little bit."

Pavel Bure scored in the first period before Viktor Kozlov and
former Senator Vaclav Prospal added goals in the second to give
the Panthers a 3-0 cushion. Kozlov was victimized by bad luck
and hit both goalposts in a three-minute span midway through the
second period.

"We were playing good enough to win, but then we stopped playing
the game we needed to play," Kozlov said.

Hossa and fellow All-Star Radek Bonk tallied late in the second
to bring the Senators within a goal before Chris Phillips tied
it with a power-play goal 6:36 into the third.

"Anytime you come back from 3-0, it feels great," Bonk said. "It
feels better than a game you lead all the time. We knew we
could come back. All we needed was the first goal and we
started rolling."

The Senators began their comeback after Florida defensemen
Anders Eriksson and Yan Golubovsky took penalties to give Ottawa
a two-man advantage. Hossa cashed in on the 5-on-3 to make it
3-1 9:03 into the second, then assisted on Bonk's goal that
pulled the Senators within 3-2 with 5:32 left in the period.

With Ward in the box for holding, Kidd stopped Shawn McEachern's
shot from the slot, but Phillips stuffed the rebound under the
crossbar to get Ottawa even.

Yashin, who has 12 goals in his last 10 contests, took a pass in
the left faceoff circle from McEachern and beat Kidd with a
one-timer to put the Senators ahead.

"It was a great pass by McEachern and it was a wide-open net,"
Yashin said. "We got some lucky bounces. It's nice to get a
win."

But Ottawa rookie Karel Rachunek was penalized for holding with
8:18 left and Boyle converted 57 seconds into the ensuing power
play. He snared a loose puck along the right boards and beat
goalie Patrick Lalime with a slap shot to the stick side.

Kidd made 28 saves, including three in the extra session, while
Lalime turned aside 18 shots.
