Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Daniel Alfredsson's power-play goal 85
seconds into the third period lifted the Ottawa Senators to a
1-1 tie with the Washington Capitals.

With the Senators enjoying a 4-on-3 advantage, Alfredsson
unleashed a slap shot from the top of the right circle that
sailed past Washington goaltender Olaf Kolzig. It was just the
second goal in 15 games for Alfredsson, who has only 10 after
scoring 21 in 57 games last season.

Kolzig made 33 saves for Washington, which owns the best home
record in the Eastern Conference at 15-4-6-1. The Capitals are
8-0-3-1 when Kolzig makes at least 30 stops.

"We traded chances and I guess if it's anything, it's a good
tie," Kolzig said. "You don't want to tie or not win at home,
but they're not in first place in the conference for nothing.
They are well disciplined, pretty good defensive hockey team so
we have got to be somewhat pleased."

Ottawa had a chance to win in the final seconds of regulation.
With teammate Radek Bonk in front of the net, Alexei Yashin
fired a slap shot from the top of the right circle. But Kolzig
got a stick on Bonk's deflection to force overtime.

The Senators, who had three of the five shots in the extra
session, are 1-1-9 in overtime this season.

With less than 10 seconds to play in overtime, Washington's
Brendan Witt got off a shot near the left post. But Ottawa
goalie Patrick Lalime sprawled out to make the save and preserve
the tie.

Lalime, who had given up nine goals in the first two meetings
between the teams, stopped 23 shots for Ottawa.

The very clean contest featured no penalties until 4:30 into the
second period and just five power-play opportunities.

Jeff Halpern opened the scoring 9:46 into the first period,
sliding the puck underneath Lalime for his 10th goal. Ottawa
center John Emmons was caught out of position on the play as
Halpern recorded his fifth point in the last six games.

"It's the type of thing where it's my stick at the end of it,
and it's more of those guys doing all the work." Halpern said.
"Olie is our superstar and he has been all year. If he's not
the best goalie in the league then I'm not sure who is."

The teams are 1-1-1 in three games this season.
