Game Story

OTTAWA (Ticker) -- Alexei Yashin and the Ottawa Senators love
facing the New York Islanders.

Yashin scored a pair of power-play goals and Jani Hurme made 36
saves as the Senators continued their dominance of the reeling
Islanders with a 3-1 victory.

The club's leading scorer, Yashin made it 1-0 midway through the
first period and scored again early in the second, giving Ottawa
a 3-1 advantage.

Yashin has lit up the Islanders throughout his career, with 20
goals and 18 assists in 26 games. He has four goals and one
assist in three games against New York this season.

Making his first start since January 25, Hurme was sharp,
stopping at least 10 shots in each period. His parents were in
attendance for the first time in his NHL career.

"I was nervous at first," said Hurme, a 26-year-old native of
Finland. "My parents were watching for the first time in four
years since I was at Indianapolis (IHL)."

"It's encouraging to see him perform that way. It's good for his
confidence," Ottawa coach Jacques Martin said.

Marian Hossa also scored on the power play in the first period
for the Senators, who improved to 15-1-5 against the Islanders
since February 12, 1996.

"It's tough to say why we're successful against them. We don't
rate teams, we just play our game," Yashin said. "It just
happened to be the Islanders tonight."

The Senators stopped a five-game winless streak and moved into a
tie atop the Eastern Conference with the New Jersey Devils.
Ottawa plays at New Jersey on Wednesday.

With his club trying to erase a two-goal deficit in the third
period, Islanders coach Butch Goring pulled rookie goaltender
Rick DiPietro with 3:59 remaining. New York had a brief two-man
advantage until Dave Scatchard took a hooking penalty with 3:50
left.

"Sometimes it's a good move when you're two goals down, you get
aggressive and try to get something going," said Bill Muckalt,
who scored New York's goal. "It didn't pay off tonight but if we
play smart and stay out of the penalty box, we could be
successful."

New York suffered its fifth straight loss.

Ranked 20th in the league in power-play efficiency at home, the
Senators used that unit to their advantage after Steve Martins
was called for interference at 8:59 of the opening period.

Less than a minute into the power play, Yashin beat DiPietro
with a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle for
his 25th goal.

Hossa, playing in his 200th NHL game, helped the Senators extend
the lead with 5:46 left in the period. He had his shot from
just to left of the crease stopped by DiPietro, but the
19-year-old goalie failed to control the rebound and Hossa poked
it home for his 22nd goal.

"I knew it was my 200th game because I had to donate $200 to the
team fund. We do that every 100 games," Hossa said.

"I felt like I had it in my chest but it dropped by my foot,"
DiPietro said. "There wasn't much net, but he got it past me
some how."

Scatchard redeemed himself for his earlier penalty, helping New
York score with 4:13 left in the first period. After stripping
the puck from Yashin in the Ottawa zone, Scatchard got the puck
to Muckalt, who beat Hurme from the bottom of the right faceoff
circle for his eighth goal.

Hurme made 27 saves over the final two periods, improving his
season record to 9-4-4.

Yashin scored the Senators' third power-play goal with 15:50
left in the second period, beating DiPietro with a wrist shot
from the top of the slot.

Ottawa went 3-for-7 on the power play while the Islanders went
scoreless in seven chances with the extra attacker.

"The power play was great, and obviously, the three goals were
the difference in the game," Martin said.
