Game Story

BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) -- Dominik Hasek made 30 saves for
his seventh shutout and J.P. Dumont and Miroslav Satan scored as
the Buffalo Sabres won their third straight game, a 2-0 blanking
of the Ottawa Senators.

Hasek made nine saves in the first period, 11 in the second and
10 in the third to move into a tie with Ed Belfour of the Dallas
Stars for the NHL lead in shutouts. The five-time Vezina Trophy
winner's 52 career shutouts move him into sole possession of
17th place on the all-time list.

"Defense did a great job," Hasek said. "You look at the whole
game I don't think one time there was a 2-on-1. From a
defensive point it was probably our best game of the season. I
had to make some saves but I could see all the shots."

Two of Hasek's shutouts this season have come against Ottawa.
The Senators, who are eight points ahead of the Sabres for the
lead in the Northeast Division, have split four meetings with
Buffalo this season. The Senators have gone 0-4-1 in their last
five trips to Buffalo, managing just two goals.

Buffalo had a power play when Dumont scored his 17th goal 7:13
into the game. Dumont took a pass from Chris Gratton and had the
puck on the goal line to the left of goaltender Patrick Lalime.
His wrist shot deflected off Lalime's skate and in for a 1-0
lead.

"It went five-hole," said Lalime about the bad-angle goal. "It
went five-hole, he turned around like he was going to pass and I
opened my legs a little."

Dumont had missed two games with an oblique injury.

"It felt pretty good, I wanted to come back," Dumont said. "It's
easy to come back when the team's on a streak. I scored the
goal, I am really happy."

After Ottawa outshot Buffalo, 11-6, in a scoreless second
period, Satan got his team-leading 22nd goal with four minutes
to play. Maxim Afinogenov intercepted a pass in the neutral
zone and began a break into the Senators' zone. Afinogenov held
the puck and skated through the right faceoff circle. Satan
streaked through the left circle, took a perfect pass from
Afinogenov and tipped the shot by Lalime.

Satan has six goals and five assists on a six-game points
streak.

"I sure enjoy playing with him," said Satan about Afinogenov. "I
don't think too many guys would even attempt it and he put it
right on my stick. It was nice to have at least one odd-man
rush in the game. That was our focus: keep the game tight and
try to play a low-scoring game like always against them."

Lalime, named NHL Player of the Week earlier in the day, had
allowed just three goals in winning his last three games.

"It was just like a playoff game, battle for space, battle for
shots, low-scoring," Lalime said. "Every chance can be the
difference in the game and every goal can be a big difference."

Ottawa had a four-game winning streak snapped.
