Game Story

OTTAWA (Ticker) -- J.P. Dumont scored twice and Dominik Hasek
made 29 saves as the Buffalo Sabres opened a five-game road trip
with a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators.

Enjoying a breakout campaign, Dumont reached the 20-goal mark
after totaling just nine NHL goals while spending most of the
previous two seasons in the minor leagues.

Dumont snapped a tie 4:16 into the second, then provided
insurance with a power-play goal with 7:42 left in the period.
Vladimir Tsyplakov iced the win with 47 seconds remaining in the
third.

"This was an important game for us and the two goals were big
ones for me," Dumont said. "I reached the 20-goal plateau for
the first time and (the goals are) obviously big for the team.
They gave us the win."

After a scoreless first period, Ottawa's Shawn McEachern opened
the scoring 41 seconds into the second. But Erik Rasmussen tied
it just nine seconds later.

Hasek has won two in a row in Ottawa after ending a personal
eight-game winless streak at the Corel Centre. The Sabres have
won three straight against Ottawa and lead the season series,
3-1.

"It's always hard to play against Hasek," Ottawa right wing
Marian Hossa said. "We tried to shoot a lot tonight, but we
needed more traffic in front of him and we didn't get it."

Patrick Lalime stopped 17 shots for the Senators, who had a
three-game winning streak stopped and lost to Buffalo for the
second time in nine days. Hasek made 30 saves and Dumont also
scored in the Sabres' 2-0 home victory on February 19.

Tuesday's defeat also ended Ottawa's five-game home winning
streak.

"You don't own anybody in this league," Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff
said. "I think we're the only team that's beaten them recently
and sometimes it's a matter of momentum or getting some
bounces."

McEachern's snap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle
beat Hasek high to the glove side, but Rasmussen snapped a
wrister from the left circle past Lalime's glove.

Just over 3 1/2 minutes later, Chris Gratton feathered a pass
across to the slot to Dumont, who put a one-timer past Lalime to
give the Sabres the lead.

With Ottawa defenseman Jason York serving a slashing penalty,
Tsyplakov dumped the puck into the Senators' zone. Lalime
fanned on a clearing attempt, putting the puck on the stick of
Dumont, who banked it into the net off the knee of Ottawa
defenseman Wade Redden for Buffalo's third goal of the second
period.

"It feels good," Dumont said. "It's always great when you can
contribute to a victory. Our power play has struggled at times,
but we showed that you have to play disciplined against us or we
can score with the mad advanatge."

"J.P. was big for us tonight," Ruff added. "Battling in front
of the net for second and third opportunities often makes a
difference against a strong defensive team."

The Senators were unable to recover from the three-goal
outburst, getting few solid scoring chances in the third period.

"They capitalized on our mistakes," Ottawa coach Jacques Martin
said. "I think we gave them the game tonight in the second
period. They were fresh, and that may have been a bit of an
advantage."

The Sabres were content to sit back in the final period, when
they were outshot, 12-6.

"We spent some time in our end, but we didn't give up many
quality opportunities," Ruff said. "It was a bit of a
rope-a-dope on our part. They had no odd-man rushes and we
brought a passive forecheck in their end."

"The goal they scored, I was upset," Hasek added. "I should
have made the save. (Alexei) Yashin had some good chances. I
stopped (Martin) Havlat on a breakaway, but everything else was
from far out or from along the boards."
