Game Story

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Patrik Elias, Jason
Arnott and Petr Sykora are having fun again. And that's bad
news for the rest of the NHL.

Elias scored 28 seconds into overtime and the New Jersey Devils
extended their winning streak to five games with a 3-2 triumph
over the Ottawa Senators in a battle of the top teams in the
Eastern Conference.

Elias carried into the Ottawa zone in the opening minute of the
extra period and made a between-the-legs pass to Arnott at the
top of the left faceoff circle. His shot missed the net, but
the puck caromed to Elias, who slipped it into a half-empty net
for his 27th goal of the season and third game-winner.

"You've got to shoot the puck when you have the chance," Elias
said. "He shot it and I was fortunate to be in the right place.
It was a lucky bounce."

Arnott also had a power-play goal and Sykora, the third member
of New Jersey's top line, contributed an assist. The trio has
combined for 11 goals and 11 assists in three games since Arnott
returned from a back injury.

"Yeah, it's fun since we've been reunited. It's been a lot of
fun," Arnott said. "We've really been clicking as a line. It's
great to hear the crowd ooh and aah when we're running on all
cylinders."

Sergei Brylin, the latest Devil to return to the lineup, got the
tying goal on the power play early in the third period as New
Jersey erased a 2-0 deficit and moved back into first place in
the Atlantic Division. The Devils are four points behind Ottawa
for the top seed in the East.

"I felt we needed the point if we wanted to have any chance at
all of gaining (on them). We needed this win more than we
wanted a tie because of the way the points are," said New Jersey
coach Larry Robinson, who opted to use three forwards at the
start of overtime. "This was a big extra point for us because
we don't see them the rest of the year. We have to rely on
other teams to do our dirty work."

Shawn McEachern scored both goals for the Senators, who lost for
just the second time in seven games (5-1-0-1). They were
unbeaten in the first three meetings with New Jersey this
season.

"Yeah, it was a tough one to lose, first because we blew a lead,
and secondly because of who our opponent was," McEachern said.
"We didn't capitalize on our power-play chances and they seemed
to generate momentum from their penalty-kill. They built on
that and we didn't respond strong enough."

Arnott's errant pass early in the second period sent Ottawa in
on a 2-on-1 and McEachern scored his second goal of the game to
make it 2-0.

But Arnott atoned for his miscue with 61 seconds left in the
second, starting the Devils' comeback by lifting a rebound of
Scott Stevens' shot over sprawled goaltender Patrick Lalime.

"I wanted to go out there and get it right back," Arnott said.
"I don't know what kind of mood I would be in right now if I
didn't."

Brylin, who missed five games following knee surgery, tied it
1:55 into the third period. With All-Star right wing Marian
Hossa serving a holding penalty, Brylin scored his 19th goal on
a deflection of Stevens' pass.

"We had some good momentum. We played hard for two periods,"
Ottawa coach Jacques Martin said. "In the third, the reverse
happened and that gave them the momentum."

McEachern staked the Senators to a 1-0 lead 7:17 into the first
period. Alexei Yashin passed from behind the net and McEachern
beat Martin Brodeur from low in the right circle.

Brodeur stopped only 16 shots but made several big saves early
to keep New Jersey in it.

"We started throwing the body around in the third, but we needed
to do that earlier," Robinson said. "They're big and talented
and you can't give them time and room and space and let them do
what they are capable of doing."
