Game Story
BOSTON (Ticker) -- Marian Hossa and Radek Bonk scored six
minutes apart in the third period as the Ottawa Senators
withstood a rally by the Boston Bruins to post a 5-3 victory.
Hossa snapped a tie 5:20 into the third, just five seconds after
a power play expired, before Bonk scored his second of the game
on the power play to give Ottawa a two-goal cushion with 8:18
remaining.
The Senators improved to 6-1-0-1 in their last eight games and
remained four points ahead of New Jersey for the top spot in the
Eastern Conference.
"Our power play stepped up when we most needed it," Bonk said.
"We needed a big goal and our power play stepped up. We always
talk about special teams being a big part of the game, and
that's what it proved today."
The Bruins were outplayed over the first 40 minutes and trailed,
3-1, entering the third period. But they came out on fire as
Joe Thornton and Brian Rolston scored in the first 94 seconds of
the period to tie it.
Shawn McEachern haunted his former team, scoring Ottawa's first
two goals for a 2-0 lead. Alexei Yashin assisted on both.
"We're a talented team and that's what we tried to do, but
tonight I think we won the game on the power play," said
McEachern, who had his second straight two-goal game.
Mike Knuble got Boston on the board with 5:04 left in the
second, but Bonk restored Ottawa's two-goal cushion, scoring on
a breakaway with 2:22 left in the period.
The Bruins suffered their third straight loss and remained two
points behind Carolina in the battle for the final playoff slot
in the East.
Boston got a break when Ottawa defenseman Chris Phillips was
penalized for holding with six seconds left in the second
period.
The Bruins cashed in the power play 24 seconds into the third.
From behind the net, Jason Allison swept the puck in front and
Thornton banged in the rebound. Allison recorded his 200th NHL
assist.
Allison also set up Boston's second goal with a similar play
just over a minute later. After Knuble whacked at the puck,
Rolston poked it behind goaltender Patrick Lalime to get the
Bruins even.
Boston continued to buzz around the net and had a chance to take
the lead, but Lalime stopped Thornton on a breakaway with 17
minutes left.
The game turned seconds later when Bill Guerin went off for
holding, giving Ottawa its first power play of the contest.
"We took some undisciplined penalties at the end," Bruins coach
Mike Keenan said. "People losing their man have to get
themselves into position by taking a penalty."
The Bruins killed off the penalty but could not get the puck out
of the zone. Following a Boston giveaway, rookie Martin Havlat
passed into the slot to Hossa, who ripped a one-timer over
goalie John Grahame's right shoulder.
Another penalty to Guerin, this one for hooking with 9:45
remaining, set up Bonk's goal that put it away. Bonk gathered a
loose puck in the slot, went to his forehand and wristed a shot
between Grahame's pads.
"We made too many mistakes and it seemed like every time we made
a mistake, they scored," Guerin said. "That's the type of game
they play. They're very patient, they prey on turnovers and
loose pucks and we gave them too many."
Lalime made 25 saves while Grahame turned aside 22 shots for the
Bruins, who have allowed 14 goals in their last three games.
