Game Story
OTTAWA (Ticker) -- The Ottawa Senators scored three goals in the
third period and defeated the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, 4-1, to
take sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference.
The Senators scored three unanswered goals and tied the
franchise record for most wins at home with their 24th of the
season.
Magnus Arvedson gave Ottawa a 2-0 advantage 2 1/2 minutes into
the third and Alexei Yashin made it 3-0 with 6:49 left, grabbing
the puck off a turnover and backhanding it high past
Jean-Sebastien Giguere for a shorthanded goal.
After Giguere was pulled with 1:15 to play, Mike Sillinger slid
home an empty-net goal from outside the blue line to cap the
scoring with 32 seconds remaining.
Marian Hossa also scored for the Senators, who were tied with
idle New Jersey atop the East. They have two more wins than the
Devils and won the season series, giving them the inside track
on the top seed in the playoffs.
"We felt we had to get the lead against these guys," Hossa said.
"We were very conscious of protecting the lead in the third
after what happened in Washington after blowing the 5-2 lead."
Rookie Antti-Jussi Niemi scored his first NHl goal for Anaheim,
which fell to 1-2-0-0 on its eight-game road trip and 9-19-4-3
overall away from home.
Niemi, who was traded for Ottawa goaltender Patrick Lalime,
skated through a screen and beat the netminder glove side.
"I didn't think about that at all," Niemi said. "I just got the
puck and tried to throw it at the net and it found the hole."
"I didn't see it until the last second," Lalime said. "I put my
arm up but it was too late. I knew it was his first NHL goal,
and I knew he was the guy I was traded for."
Giguere lost just his second game in seven outings as the Mighty
Ducks dropped their second straight. They had just eight shots
in the final period.
"We played a strong game and I don't believe the score to be
indicative of what went on out there," Anaheim coach Guy Charron
said. "It seems if (Paul) Kariya isn't scoring, our team isn't
scoring. We need more production from other players."
Hossa netted his 30th goal and extended his points streak to
five games with 6:58 left in the first period, breaking the
scoreless tie on a 3-on-2 break.
From just inside the blue line, Hossa fired a slap shot from the
top of the right faceoff circle that sailed to the glove side of
Giguere.
"It was nice to accomplish it and get it out of the way," Hossa
said. "Last year, I had 29 and this is a good stepping stone for
me. I have to give credit to my teammates, though."
