Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- For a team fighting for the final Western
Conference playoff spot, the Phoenix Coyotes did not come out
with a sense of urgency.

Magnus Arvedson tallied twice as the Ottawa Senators scored four
times in the first 10 1/2 minutes and cruised to a 5-2 victory
over the fading Coyotes.

Daniel Alfredsson opened the scoring with a power-play goal 4:33
into the contest. One of 10 players named to Sweden's Olympic
team earlier Wednesday, Alfredsson took a pass from Rico Persson
and flipped a wrist shot by goaltender Sean Burke's glove side
for his 21st of the season.

"When we got the first goal, it opened up the game," Alfredsson
said. "They had to take chances because they must win."

Arvedson doubled the lead 33 seconds later when he put a rebound
of Jason York's shot past Burke from the slot for his 16th goal.
Andreas Dackell gave the Senators a three-goal cushion at 7:42.

"It was real important to come out like we did in the first,
especially after having a couple of days off," Arvedson said.
"We needed it for our confidence after Dallas. We had a lot of
chances early. We had to score. We had some problems in the
second, didn't play as smart as we should, came back in the
third."

With 9:26 to go in the opening period, Arvedson buried a rebound
of Mike Fisher's shot from the right faceoff circle to make it
4-0.

Ottawa set a team record with 25 shots in the first period and
remained two points behind New Jersey for the top seed in the
Eastern Conference.

Phoenix suffered its third straight loss and fell to 0-4-2-0 in
its last six contests. The Coyotes are tied with Los Angeles
for eighth place in the West but have three fewer wins.

"To be quite frank, it's inexcusable," Phoenix coach Bob Francis
said of his team's performance. "Our backs are against the wall
and we should be a desperate hockey team. We know that we're
playing a good team that was desperate as well. They're
fighting for first in the East and coming off a 5-1 defeat. We
knew they weren't going to be happy, we knew they were going to
come out hard. Why we didn't is beyond me."

Burke had 21 saves and was replaced by rookie Robert Esche at
the start of the second period.

"My job is to stop the puck, so I didn't do my job and that's
all I can be concerned with," Burke said. "At times like this,
we all have to look in the mirror and ask ourselves if we are
doing everything we can do."

Trevor Letowski cut the Coyotes' deficit to 4-1 when he stole a
pass from Alfredsson and beat Patrick Lalime from the slot for
his sixth goal.

Phoenix closed within 4-2 with 7:48 to go in the second. Michal
Handzus took a pass from Ladislav Nagy, skated behind Ottawa's
net and stuffed a backhander off Lalime's stick and inside the
left goalpost for his 11th of the season.

Ottawa converted a power play with 4 1/2 minutes left in the
second when Shawn McEachern became the third Senator to score 30
goals this season.

Phoenix had seven of the eight shots in the third period but
failed to capitalize on a pair of power-play chances, including
two-man advantage for 1:45.
