Game Story

UNIONDALE, New York (Ticker) -- In need of a victory, the Ottawa
Senators were playing in the right place.

Mike Fisher scored the go-ahead goal with 16:57 remaining as the
Senators stayed alive for the top seed in the Eastern Conference
with a 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders.

After goaltender Chris Terreri stopped Marian Hossa's shot,
Fisher put the rebound home to give Ottawa the lead.

"It was a tough game," Senators coach Jacques Martin said. "We
did some good things, we battled hard."

The Senators trail the New Jersey Devils by two points for the
top spot in the East. Ottawa, which owns the tiebreaker over
New Jersey, closes its season on Saturday against Toronto. The
Devils play their season finale at Montreal on Saturday.

After falling behind 3-1, the Islanders rallied to tie the
contest on second-period goals by Dave Scatchard and Mariusz
Czerkawski.

The loss marked the Islanders' 50th of the season. New York
reached that dubious milestone for the third time in franchise
history, also having dropped that many games in 1972-73 and
1995-96.

New York fell to 3-11-4 against Ottawa at the Nassau Coliseum
since the 1992-93 season.

Rookie defenseman Karel Rachunek assisted on both Ottawa goals
in the opening 11:35 of the contest to help the Senators take a
2-0 lead.

Todd White scored off a rebound after Rachunek's slap shot front
the right point was stopped by Terreri. Andreas Dackell, who
played in his 400th NHL game, also had an assist on the goal.

"We came out really flat in the first 10 minutes, it was kind of
ugly," said Terreri, who recorded 22 saves. "Then we really
turned it around. I thought we played hard after that."

Daniel Alfredsson's 24th goal at 11:35 of the opening period,
extended Ottawa's lead to 2-0. The Senators' captain,
Alfredsson has points in nine straight games with three goals
and six assists during that span.

Alfredsson also helped create Alexei Yashin's goal at 3:52 of
the second which provided a 3-1 advantage.

With the playoffs less than a week away, the Senators played
without five regulars due to injury.

"I thought we came out with a real excellent first period,"
Martin said. "The second period, we ran into some penalty
problems. Overall, I thought we had a pretty good performance.
We have one more game, then get ready for the playoffs.
Hopefully, we have some people back."

Following Yashin's goal, the Islanders responded later in the
period by scoring twice in a 6:08 span to tie it.

Scatchard scored his 21st goal of the season and the Islanders'
first on the power play against the Senators this season at
9:28, closing the deficit to 3-2. New York went 1-for-19 on the
power play against Ottawa this season.

Just over seven minutes later, the Islanders pulled even on
Czerkawski's 30th goal of the season. He took a pass from Brad
Isbister and scored from in front, reaching the 30-goal mark for
the second straight season.

Czerkawski is the first Islander to post back-to-back 30-goal
seasons since Ziggy Palffy collected more than 40 in three
straight seasons between 1995-98.

"It's just one goal, one shot, but it feels good," Czerkawski
said. "It was my goal to do it again, but it doesn't feel as
good with us not winning the game or making the playoffs."
