Game Story
TORONTO (Ticker) -- Patrick Lalime made 26 saves for his seventh
career shutout as the Ottawa Senators remained unbeaten with a
4-0 blanking of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Lalime stopped nine shots in the first period, 10 in the second
and seven in the third for his first shutout since a 4-0 victory
over Washington on April 4.
The Senators have opened with three wins and a tie and improved
to 24-9-5 in October over the last four seasons.
"When you win, it's a team win," Lalime said. "We scored some
big goals at a big time and we shut them down for the rest of
the game. It was fun to play."
After getting dominated throughout, the frustrated Maple Leafs
were called for five minor penalties and two misconducts in the
final nine minutes.
"Until we start to learn to do the things you have to do when
there is another good team out there -- not making many mistakes
-- then you're not going to be good," Toronto coach Pat Quinn
said.
Magnus Arvedson gave Lalime all the offense he needed with 7:36
left in the first period before 19-year-old rookie Martin Havlat
scored his first NHL goal on a breakaway 3:06 into the second.
Havlat turned around the early in the second period,
intercepting a clearing pass by rookie Donald MacLean, who was
playing his first game for the Maple Leafs. Havlat broke in
alone down the left wing and beat Curtis Joseph with a slap shot
to the top left corner of the net.
"I poked the puck and had a breakaway," said Havlat, who also
recorded an assist on Rob Zamuner's shorthanded goal that made
it 3-0 in the third period. "I saw Curtis Joseph think that I
will go backhand and I shoot and score. A nice first goal."
"(Dimitri) Yushkevich gave me a good pass and I was away with
some speed and I thought instead of stickhandling by him, I'll
throw it by (Havlat)," MacLean said. "But he blocked it and
took it away and scored."
Sami Salo tallied with 1:26 remaining while the Senators had a
two-man advantage to complete the scoring.
"We were beat in all the fundamentals areas of the game
tonight," Quinn said. "They were far ahead of us in team play
and discipline."
Alexei Yashin picked up an assist on Salo's goal, giving him a
point in all four of the Senators' games this season. Ottawa's
former captain sat out all of 1999-00 over a bitter contract
dispute.
"We rolled four lines all night long and I think we were fresh
in the third period," Zamuner said. "We got stronger as the
game went on."
The Senators got on the board when Arvedson got a piece of
defenseman Rico Persson's centering pass and deflected it past
Joseph, who made 30 saves.
"If you look at the first week, all against elite teams --
Dallas, New Jersey, Toronto and Philadelphia -- it's a good test
and a great way to start so far," Zamuner said. "It's obviously
a long season, but it's great to have a quick start."
It was the first meeting between the provincial rivals since
Toronto eliminated Ottawa in six games in last season's Eastern
Conference quarterfinals.
