Game Story
KANATA, Ontario (Ticker) -- It took a pair of hat tricks, 77
shots and a furious comeback for the Atlanta Thrashers and
Ottawa Senators to keep their streaks alive.
Donald Audette matched Andreas Dackell's hat trick with one of
his own as the winless Thrashers rallied for a 6-6 tie with the
Senators.
Audette completed his third career hat trick and first in five
years with the final goal of the game, scoring with 5:25 left in
the third period.
"It's a big year for me. It's my chance to prove to people that
I can still play," Audette said.
The Thrashers trailed, 5-1, before Audette scored his first of
the game 5:23 into the second period. He made it 6-4 with 26
seconds left in the period.
"Despite being down, 5-1, we felt we had good chances and could
come back," Atlanta goaltender Damian Rhodes said. "We never
quit in the third period and we got our shot. We showed that we
can score if we clean up our own end."
Audette also had an assist for Atlanta, which tied a team record
for goals in a game but remained winless this season at 0-4-2.
"We have confidence in every aspect of our game," Audette said.
"We're starting to come around and we know if we stay
disciplined, we can compete."
The Senators extended the best start in franchise history to
4-0-3 after scoring five times in the opening 24:28 against one
of the NHL's two winless teams.
"We can't let up that many goals or that many chances," Ottawa
coach Jacques Martin said. "They got a lot of good chances on
their own, but we've got to do a better job defensively."
The Senators led Pittsburgh, 3-0, entering the third period, but
settled for a 3-3 tie on Thursday. Jani Hurme, playing for
injured starter Patrick Lalime, made 33 saves but again blew a
lead.
"We're having a focus problem and we have to trust eachother
again," Dackell said. "We have to get back to the simple stuff,
playing like we did at the beginning of the year."
Dackell scored Ottawa's second, fourth and fifth goals for his
first career hat trick. Linemates Alexei Yashin and Shawn
McEachern each had four assists.
"Our line had it going good offensivley, but that doesn't always
win games," McEachern said.
Rob Zamuner and Marian Hossa scored around Dackell's first goal
for a 3-0 lead 13:31 into the game. Hossa's third goal of the
season was his 100th NHL point.
Ray Ferraro sliced the deficit to 3-1 with his fourth of the
season at 16:11 of the first period, but Dackell tallied twice
in the first 4 1/2 minutes of the second for a 5-1 cushion.
Dackell has the team lead with five goals. He capped the hat
trick at 4:28 of the second when he stole the puck from Rhodes,
a former Senator, and slid it around him.
"I'm not concerned about my points," Dackell said. "Winning the
game is more important."
Rhodes stopped 32 shots and remained winless in three meetings
with Ottawa since he was traded. He lost in his Corel Centre
return last season, allowing six goals on 16 shots in a 7-1
setback on March 21.
"We came here last year and let six goals in the first period,"
Rhodes said. "Tonight, we let in three goals in the first, so we
cut it in half."
Atlanta's Hnat Domenichelli and Ottawa's Magnus Arvedson traded
goals before Audette scored his second in the closing seconds of
the second period.
Shean Donovan got Atlanta within 6-5 with a shorthanded goal
12:14 into the third period.
"The shorthanded goal was a huge lift to our club, especially
tying a team of this caliber like Ottawa who's having the best
start in their franchise's history," Thrashers coach Curt Fraser
said.
Audette finished his hat trick with 5:25 left in regulation,
beating Hurme, who stopped shots from Andrew Brunette and
Ferraro.
"We needed a huge game tonight out of Ferraro's line, and they
did it," Fraser said. "They made things happen. Fortunately,
they found the back of the net for us."
Acquired last season from Los Angeles, Audette has a hand in 13
of Atlanta's 18 goals this season with six goals and seven
assists.
"I had a good summer and I worked hard," he said. "Every time I
have a strength coach in the offseason, I have a good year."
Hossa had just one point but has a seven-game points streak with
three goals and 10 assists. He also leads the NHL with a
plus-11 rating.
Despite his four assists, Yashin continues to be booed at the
Corel Centre. He held out all of last season but has at least
one point in each game with three goals and eight assists.
