OTTAWA (AP) -- Petr Schastlivy and the Ottawa Senators made the most of
their considerable practice time.
Schastlivy scored twice and Patrick Lalime made 20 saves to lead the
well-rested Senators to a 4-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on
Wednesday night.
With Ottawa playing its first game in eight days, Schastlivy scored a
power-play goal in the first period. He added his second of the game --
his third of the season -- early in the third to put the Senators up
2-0.
"Sometimes it's good for players to have a good rest,'' Schastlivy
said. "We worked very hard in practice, too. With eight days off, we
practiced very hard.''
Hurricanes captain Ron Francis scored his fourth of the season with
12:12 left to draw Carolina within one.
Radek Bonk scored a power-play goal at 16:33 and Mike Fisher scored
into an empty net with 15 seconds remaining as Ottawa won its third
straight following a season-opening loss to New Jersey on Oct. 10.
"It's so much more fun than practicing,'' Senators captain Daniel
Alfredsson said. "It's fun practicing for a little bit, but games are
what's fun. Watching on TV, you see scores from other teams and we
haven't played. Some teams are up to seven games already so it was nice
to get out there, especially getting a win.''
Rookie defenseman Anton Volchenkov assisted on both of Schastlivy's
goals for his first NHL points.
Carolina won two of three -- including a 4-1 win in New York over the
Islanders the night before -- during the Senators' layoff.
"Our team is in pretty good shape, so that wasn't an issue,''
Hurricanes center Rod Brind'Amour said. "It's kind of strange, though,
that we would have played eight games and they were on their fourth.
That's kind of weird, but it all evens out. Over the course of the year
you've got to play the same amount of games in basically the same
amount of days.''
Lalime got an assist on Schastlivy's first goal 11:21 in. Volchenkov
sent the puck to Schastlivy, whose wrist shot from the right circle
caromed into the net off goalie Arturs Irbe's blocker.
Schastlivy got another fortuitous bounce on his second goal 1:44 into
the third when his shot deflected off defenseman Marek Malik before
floating over Irbe into the net.
"That's the way it goes,'' Irbe said. "What can I do? I can't change
the bounces. There are bounces that go the other way, and bounces that
go your way. I had a few bounces that went my way, as well.''
Jeff O'Neill got his seventh assist in eight games to set up Carolina's
goal at 7:48. Lying on the ice, O'Neill swept his stick to strip the
puck from defenseman Wade Redden.
Francis, who fanned on a goalmouth scramble during a power play in the
second, found himself alone in front of the net and beat Lalime with a
quick backhand.
Game notes
Bonk suffered a chest injury, but finished the game. He experienced
pain after the game and will be re-examined Thursday. He was listed as
day-to-day. As insurance, the Senators recalled top prospect C Jason
Spezza, who was the second overall pick in the 2001 entry draft. He'll
join the team in Boston for Ottawa's game Thursday night. ...
Hurricanes defenseman Glen Wesley broke his stick on the net following
Fisher's goal. ... Carolina lost one and tied one in Ottawa last season
while going 0-3-1-0 against the Senators overall. ... Lalime has
allowed five goals while starting each of Ottawa's four games this
season. ... The Senators' first three games ended 2-1. ... Ottawa,
which plays in Boston on Thursday, has five games in eight days,
including three in four.
