Capitals' Jagr held scoreless again
OTTAWA (AP) -- Marian Hossa had a goal and an assist as the Ottawa
Senators broke the game open in the third period and beat the
Washington Capitals 5-1 Thursday night.
Radek Bonk, Bryan Smolinski, Daniel Alfredsson and Zdeno Chara also
scored for the Senators. Martin Havlat had two assists in his first
game since the restricted free agent signed a one-year contract.
Patrick Lalime made 17 saves.
Peter Bondra scored for the Capitals, who are winless in their last six
games (0-5-1). Olaf Kolzig stopped 22 shots.
Holding a 2-1 lead at the start of the third, Ottawa scored three goals
in the first six minutes of the period. Smolinski started the outburst
when he knocked in a rebound off Kolzig's mask.
Kolzig got caught again after giving up another big rebound 1:51 later,
leading to Alfredsson's fourth goal of the season.
Washington coach Bruce Cassidy pulled Kolzig after he gave up a goal to
Chara at 6:20. Sebastien Charpentier replaced him and stopped 13 shots.
The Capitals took a lead 32 seconds into the game when Bondra scored
during a power play.
Robert Lang won the faceoff back to Sergei Gonchar, who passed to
Bondra at the point. Bondra beat Lalime with a quick wrist shot for his
fourth goal of the season.
Bonk tied it 1-1 at 9:53 when he took a perfect pass from Havlat at the
side of the net and tapped the puck by Kolzig.
Hossa broke the tie at 6:59 of the second with a shot from just inside
the blue line.
Game notes
The Senators played the last two periods with five defensemen after
Anton Volchenkov left the game with five minutes remaining in the first
period due to a head injury. ... Bates Battaglia played his first game
with the Capitals since being traded by Colorado on Wednesday.
