Game Story
SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) -- With one shot, Pavel Bure helped
the Florida Panthers end two streaks at once.
Bure's shorthanded goal in the second period proved to be the
game-winner as the Panthers won for the first time with a 3-1
victory over the previously unbeaten Ottawa Senators.
With Florida's Paul Laus off for roughing, the Panthers had the
only chance. Jaroslav Spacek dug the puck out of the left point
and sprung Bure into the offensive zone. Bure backhanded the
puck from the low right faceoff circle off the left goalpost and
in for his fourth goal and a 2-0 lead at 7:53 of the second
period.
"We played better defensively, we killed off penalties and
scored goals," Bure said. "Sometimes for me, the puck just
doesn't go in. It will hit the crossbar or the post, but
tonight it did."
It was Bure's second goal in as many nights. He tallied during
a 3-3 tie at Nashville, snapping a five-game scoring skid.
Bure added an empty-net tally with seven seconds remaining to
seal tonight's triumph.
Florida was off to the worst start in team history (0-3-3-2),
but still was a considerable distance away from the longest
slump overall. The franchise went 15 game without a win during
the 1997-98 campaign.
Although the Panthers were the last team in the league to record
a victory, they vaulted into first place in the weak Southeast
Division.
"It's a pretty good feeling sitting up here tonight," Florida
coach Terry Murray said. "I thought it was an outstanding win
against a really good hockey club. To come out and play hard
and just play smart and skate through the 60 minutes with good
composure with the lead, it was good to see."
Ottawa was off to the hottest start in club history (6-0-3-0)
and was coming off Friday night's 6-0 blanking at Tampa Bay. The
Senators had totaled 15 goals in their last three games.
Goaltender Trevor Kidd allowed just a second-period goal from
Wade Redden and stopped 30 shots for his first victory since
March 10. He helped cool one of the hottest lines in the NHL as
the trio of Radek Bonk, Marian Hossa and Magnus Arvedson were
held scoreless for the first time this season.
The line was spectacular in Friday's victory as each player
enjoyed a plus-4 rating. Tonight was just the opposite as they
combined to go minus-5 with just four shots.
"Special teams was a difference," Ottawa coach Jacques Martin
said. "They got a shorthanded goal and we didn't get anything
on our power play. We played pretty well, I don't think we got
to the net as well as in other games. We didn't win the battles
as much, but we had some chances."
Mike Sillinger scored his second goal of the season, giving
Florida a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period. He picked
up a loose puck at the left circle and wristed it under rookie
goalie Jani Hurme's arm at 10:30.
Despite allowing the lone goal of the period, the Senators
controlled the play in the first and had a great chance to tie
the game. Shawn McEachern raced in on a breakway, but Kidd made
a chest stop on his wrister.
After Bure's first goal, Ottawa was able to narrow the deficit
to one. Rookie Martin Havlat's shot in the slot was stopped by
Kidd, but the rebound bounced to Redden, who pinched in from the
point and flicked a shot under the crossbar for his first goal
since March 2.
"Right from the start, we were paying close attention to little
things out there," Kidd said. "Smart play and the little things
added up to a win. This win was big, it was starting to dwell
on us. It was nice to get three goals. We are fighting for
confidence."
