Game Story
KANATA, Ontario (Ticker) -- The battle for Ontario and early
bragging rights in the Northeast Division again went to the
Ottawa Senators, who built a three-goal lead before hanging on
for a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Behind rookies Jani Hurme and Martin Havlat, the Senators
improved to 2-0 in the season series and moved five points ahead
of the Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres for first in the
Northeast.
"It's always a rivalry against these guys and certainly we want
to win these games," said Ottawa defenseman Wade Redden, whose
team lost to Toronto in last season's conference quarterfinals.
"I think we come out with a little extra effort sometimes
against Toronto."
The Senators also bumped the best point total in the Eastern
Conference to 17 and remained unbeaten at home (3-0-2-0).
The Leafs were valiant in the third period but finished their
divisional road trip at 1-2. The defending Northeast champions
had won three straight games.
"Tonight was one of our better games for sure," star goaltender
Curtis Joseph said. "We're looking at it like a measuring stick
against a good team. We just had a few bad breaks."
Hurme nearly relinquished a three-goal lead, but he slid
goalpost to goalpost with 17 seconds left to deny Steve Thomas
on a one-timer and preserve the victory. He finished with 20
saves.
"Jani came up very big for us, especially at the end, and that's
what you need in order to win games like this one," Redden said.
Havlat scored a power-play goal and set up Rob Zamuner's
shorthanded tally as the Senators built a three-goal lead 6:14
into the third period.
Leafs enforcer Tie Domi tried taking matters into his own hands,
brawling with Andre Roy 9:45 into the third period. It seemed
to spark his team.
Defenseman Dimitri Yushkevich scored his first goal of the
season with 9:29 left and Sergei Berezin added his fourth 81
seconds later as Toronto cut its deficit to 4-3.
"That's what I try to do -- give the team a bit of a boost,"
Domi said. "Sometimes, hockey is about momentum shifts. We
seemed to have some jump after that."
After rookie defenseman Karel Rachunek was called for
interference with 1:45 to play, the Leafs had a power play for
the remainder of regulation. But they failed to score, ending
the night 1-for-7 with the man advantage.
Toronto pulled Joseph with 57 seconds remaining for a 6-on-4
advantage but could not beat Hurme, who stoned Thomas in the
closing seconds for one of his best saves of the game.
Hurme is 4-1-2-0 in place of starter Patrick Lalime, who has
been out with a knee injury since posting a 4-0 shutout at
Toronto on October 14.
"The team played a good game tonight and I got some good
bounces," Hurme said. "I'm happy with my play, and of course,
happy with a win against a good team."
The Leafs opened the scoring on Gary Roberts' power-play goal
with 7:31 left in the first, but the Senators reeled off the
next four goals bridging the final two periods.
They started with a pair of power-play tallies -- Alexei
Yashin's wrist shot through Joseph's pads 9:29 into the second
and Havlat's finish of a tic-tac-toe play down low 3:38 later.
Arvedson added to the lead 40 seconds into the third period when
he beat Joseph with a slap shot from the top of the right
faceoff circle for his team-best seventh goal.
Havlat assisted on Zamuner's shorthanded tally with 13:46 to
play. Zamuner skated through the neutral zone on the left side,
crossed the blue line and blasted a slap shot off the right
post, Joseph's skate and into the net for a 4-1 lead.
"It was perfectly off the post, but I jammed my leg when I
reached for it," Joseph said. "There was nothing I could do. It
bounced off my heal and in."
"Killing the penalty, I just wanted to get a shot and get to the
net," Zamuner said. "I hit the post and it bounced in off his
skate, I guess. We'll take the fortunate bounce."
With Zamuner's marker, the Senators had a lead of at least three
goals for the seventh time in eight games. Hurme had blown two
of the leads, settling for a pair of ties.
Joseph, who made 20 saves, had won four straight starts.
