Game Story
KANATA, Ontario (Ticker) -- Magnus Arvedson took a beating, but
he had a hand in three key goals as the Ottawa Senators
stretched their unbeaten run against the New York Rangers with a
6-5 victory.
Arvedson received a punch in the back of the head from rookie
goaltender Johan Holmqvist, drawing a penalty that led to the
tying goal by linemate Marian Hossa 6:49 into the third period.
"It wasn't a very smart penalty," Rangers coach Ron Low said.
"He was a little overexcited and anxious. It wasn't the
difference in the game, but I'd certainly like to have it back."
Arvedson scored the eventual game-winner with 4:57 to play and
set up Igor Kravchuk's goal 33 seconds later as the Senators
grabbed a 6-4 lead, taking advantage of the tiring Rangers.
New York got within a goal on Petr Nedved's marker with 2:56
left. Seconds before the goal was scored, Arvedson took an
elbow to the head from Sylvain Lefebvre.
Hossa scored twice and rookie Jani Hurme made 32 saves for the
Senators, who have won five straight against the Rangers. They
are unbeaten in the last eight meetings between the teams
(7-0-1-0).
"It's just one of those things," Ottawa defenseman Jason York
said. "We just happen to beat those guys, and tonight we waited
until the end to pull it out."
The Senators also continued the best start in franchise history,
improving to 8-1-3-0.
"They're one of the elite teams," New York left wing Adam Graves
said. "We've got to learn from games like this and continue to
improve."
The Rangers had three leads before falling for the first time in
three games. They won their previous two by an 11-2 margin,
including a 6-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on
Wednesday.
"They're a good team coming off two big wins," Bonk said. "We
knew they'd have some jump, and they did come out strong. As
usual, we tried to play our game and waited for our chances."
Ottawa's Martin Havlat tied the rookie lead with his fifth goal
2:42 into the first period, but Theoren Fleury scored his 10th
of the season and fourth in two games 43 seconds later to tie
it.
The Rangers held a 17-10 advantage in shots over the opening 20
minutes and led, 2-1, when Graves scored with 1:52 remaining in
the period.
Hossa tied it at 2-2 with his first goal of the night 11:28 into
the second before Michal Grosek scored his first of the season
with 4:50 left in the period. The game was tied, 3-3, after
two, thanks to Rob Zamuner's goal with 2:05 left.
The resilient Rangers grabbed their third lead of the game 2:47
into the third, when Jan Hlavac finished off a 2-on-1 with Radek
Dvorak.
That was the final lead for Holmqvist, who lost his cool 6 1/2
minutes into the third period, punching Arvedson in the back of
the head while in his crease.
"He was standing in my face, and I tried to move him out of the
way," said Holmqvist, who made his second NHL start. "I don't
think it was a penalty but I don't make the call."
Ottawa needed only 10 seconds of the power play to tie it. Sami
Salo took a slap shot from the left point and Hossa picked up
the rebound between New York defenseman Brian Leetch's legs at
the right goalpost for the tap-in.
The Rangers later had one of their three power plays but failed
to retake the lead. The NHL's second-rated power-play unit went
0-for-3.
After New York was unable to clear the puck from its zone for
nearly a minute, Arvedson put Ottawa ahead for good with 4:57
left, redirecting Wade Redden's snap shot over Holmqvist's
shoulder.
Just 33 seconds later, Kravchuk took a pass from Arvedson,
skated into the Rangers zone and beat Holmqvist with a wrist
shot from the right circle for a 6-4 lead.
Hossa, Arvedson and Radek Bonk, who make up the hottest line in
hockey, combined for three goals and two assists. They entered
the game with the three-best plus-minus ratings in the league.
Arvedson seemed affected by his second shot to the head, which
came from Lefebvre along the left boards in Ottawa's zone.
Nedved scored off a feed from Dvorak to snap a 10-game goalless
drought and get the Rangers within 6-5 with 2:56 left.
"These guys are a tough opponent," Low said. "I thought we
responded exceptionally well. But if you get five in this
building, you should walk away with a win every time."
The Rangers got no closer and dropped to 0-7-1-0 against the
Senators since a 2-1 road victory on December 5, 1998. They are
2-10-2 in the last 14 meetings.
"I'm very happy with the intensity and the effort we brought
into this game," New York captain Mark Messier said. "We played
well enough to earn a point. But we had some breakdowns and came
up short."
