Game Story

KANATA, Ontario (Ticker) -- Geoff Sanderson and Kevyn Adams
scored 24 seconds apart in the second period as the expansion
Columbus Blue Jackets skated to a 2-2 tie with the Ottawa
Senators.

Sanderson and Adams helped Columbus to a 2-1 lead before Shawn
McEachern beat former Senators goaltender Ron Tugnutt with a
fluke goal midway through the third period.

Tugnutt stopped 25 shots as the Blue Jackets earned a point
against the best team in the Eastern Conference. They are
2-2-1-0 after a six-game losing streak.

"It's a good point for us," Adams said. "It shows us that we
can play 60 minutes with one of the top teams in the league."

The Senators collected their conference-best 20th point and
remained unbeaten at the Corel Centre (4-0-3-0). Their only
loss of the season came on the tail end of playing on
back-to-back nights.

"We're lucky to get the one point," said Ottawa left wing Rob
Zamuner, who scored his seventh goal. "We have to learn to play
hard every night, but I guess over 82 games, there'll be some
nights like this."

Columbus, which has a league-worst minus-22 goal differential,
finished an 0-1-1-0 road trip. It killed off all five of
Ottawa's power plays while going 1-for-2 with the man advantage.

Sanderson scored on the power play with 6:05 left in the second
period. Steve Heinze's point shot got through rookie Jani
Hurme's pads and hit the left goal post. Sanderson skated
behind Hurme and through the crease to knock it in the net.

Seconds later, Adams picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone
along the left boards, skated to the top of the left faceoff
circle and ripped a snap shot over Hurme's left shoulder.

That was all the scoring for the Blue Jackets, who managed only
10 shots over the final 45 minutes. They have scored two goals
or fewer in each of their last six road games, going 0-5-1-0 in
that span.

"We didn't muster much offense," Heinze said. "But we had them
where we wanted them in the third. They're good -- they're an
elite team. But we feel like this one slipped away."

Like Hurme, Tugnutt was rarely tested, but he deserved better.
McEachern scored the tying goal with 9:12 to go in regulation,
when his centering pass from the bottom of the left circle
deflected off the stick of Columbus defenseman Lyle Odelein.

"The shot comes, I'm pushing off full speed, and then it changes
direction," Tugnutt said. "There was nothing I can do. It was
the right play for Odie."

Tugnutt played most of the previous four seasons with Ottawa. He
and teammates Bruce Gardiner and Kevin Dineen returned to the
Corel Centre for the first time since they were Senators last
season.

"I'd be lying if I said I didn't want the win," Tugnutt said.
"It was an emotional day, I was shaking before the game.
Obviously, you want to win every night. But even more, I wanted
to win in here for the three of us."

Neither team had a good scoring chance in overtime, when the
Blue Jackets had the only two shots.

"Tonight, we needed to take charge a little more," Ottawa
defenseman Jason York said. "Obviously, defense wasn't our
problem. But we can't change our game plan against expansion
clubs."

Both teams had eight shots during a scoreless first period. The
Senators dominated the second, holding a 13-4 advantage in
shots, but carried only a 1-0 lead into the third on Zamuner's
goal.
