Game Story
KANATA, Ontario (Ticker) -- Marian Hossa recorded his first
career hat trick, including the go-ahead goal in the second
period, as the Ottawa Senators snapped a four-game losing streak
with a 5-2 victory over the Florida Panthers.
Hossa's second shorthanded goal of the contest broke a 2-2 tie
at 3:34 of the second period. He broke away from the Florida
defense and let go a shot that was stopped by Roberto Luongo.
But Hossa's rebound attempt snuck by the goaltender to put the
Senators ahead for good.
"It felt good to get my first hat trick," said Hossa. "But we
really needed the win after we lost four in a row. We put
ourselves under a lot of pressure to score."
Luongo replaced starter Trevor Kidd, who left after the first
period with a right calf injury.
The first four goals were scored in the first period. But
Ottawa scored the game's last three and allowed only eight shots
in the final period.
The Panthers had four power plays but surrendered three
shorthanded goals. Hossa scored the first after teammate Alexei
Yashin was sent to the penalty box for interference 4:49 into
the opening period. Hossa beat Kidd on a breakaway at 6:08,
ending Ottawa's scoring drought at 147 minutes, 48 seconds.
"It sure was nice to see the guys play so well up front," said
Senators goalie Patrick Lalime. "You don't know how desperate
we were since we haven't scored in the last two games."
After Florida tied it on Pavel Bure's shorthanded tally, Hossa
scored again on the power play at 13:05.
"Shorthanded goals were a big letdown for us, especially to
start off the third period," Panthers coach Terry Murray said.
"The power-play goal especially felt good," Hossa said.
"Everything I did went in. You don't get games like that in the
NHL too often. I didnt know it was a record."
With two seconds left in the period, Florida rookie Serge Payer
scored his first NHL goal in the town in which he was born.
"Definitely tonight's game was more exciting, especially coming
to my hometown" said Payer who played only his fourth NHL game.
"It was one thing to be called up to Florida and win games in
Carolina and Columbus, but it's another thing to score my first
goal."
Len Barrie extended his points streak to three games when he
assisted on Payer's goal.
"It's a big year for me," said Barrie. "It started out that I
didn't play much. Then when I got ice time, I was unfortunate
to get injured. Luckily, I am producing now."
Bonk helped the Senators set a team record when he scored their
third shorthanded goal 4:07 into the final period. Shawn
McEachern sealed the victory on a breakaway, beating Luongo high
to the left side for Ottawa's only even-strength goal of the
game.
The three shorthanded goals allowed by Florida tied a franchise
record set on March 19, 1998 at Buffalo. The teams have split
two games this season and will meet twice more.
