Game Story
KANATA, Ontario (Ticker) -- The Boston Bruins cannot buy a point
on the road.
Daniel Alfredsson scored with 14 seconds left in the third
period -- just 12 seconds after Bill Guerin had tied it -- as
the Ottawa Senators handed the Bruins their eighth consecutive
road loss, 2-1.
Goaltender Byron Dafoe made a kick save on Alexei Yashin's
bad-angle shot from the left faceoff circle but left the puck
loose in front and Alfredsson poked in the rebound, giving the
Senators a stunning victory.
"(Shawn) McEachern did a great job keeping it in," Alfredsson
said. "We got it down low and there was only a little time left.
I just went to the net. The puck was there. I just tapped it and
hoped for the best."
"I'm speechless," Dafoe said "We've got a bit of a trend going
over our last few games, losing them late. It's really
frustrating. We played a good game, and scoring in the last
minute like that, we had the point but we gave it back to them
and it feels like we gave it away."
Frustrated by Patrick Lalime and the tight-checking Senators for
more than 59 minutes, the Bruins pulled Dafoe and appeared to
have earned a point when Guerin flipped a wrist shot over
Lalime's glove with 26 seconds remaining.
"After they scored, I didn't want to think about anything," said
Lalime, who recorded 22 saves. "Yeah, there was still some time
left, but you don't expect a winning goal."
After Guerin scored his first goal as a Bruin, the Senators
quickly got the puck deep into Boston's zone following the
ensuing faceoff and Alfredsson was left alone in front.
"It sure feels great to win like that," Alfredsson said. "We
played a smart, solid game. We may have gotten a bit lucky.
They're a good division rival and they played us hard."
"Yashin walked out from the corner and blasted it," said Dafoe,
who turned aside 28 shots. "Alfredsson came around from the net
and whacked it in."
Yashin also assisted on McEachern's power-play goal that gave
Ottawa a 1-0 lead with 59 seconds to go in the second period.
Dafoe, winless since October 7, made a stick save on Wade
Redden's slap shot from the blue line, but the puck bounced to
McEachern, who scored on the rebound to give the Senators a 1-0
lead.
"I made the save off Redden," Dafoe said. "The puck went up in
the air and into McEachern's chest, but he fought it off and
bumped into me and threw it in behind me."
The Bruins dropped to 3-6-1-2 under Mike Keenan, who coached his
1,007th NHL game to move past Jacques Demers into fifth place on
the all-time list. Boston has been outscored 45-13 during its
road drought.
Ottawa converted 1-of-6 power plays while the Bruins were 0-of-3
with the man advantage.
"We're not quite there," Keenan said. "We played a decent road
game but we came up short. They're a disciplined hockey team and
they showed us just how disciplined we aren't. The difference
today was we took too many penalties and they capitalized on
their power play."
"It's a tough loss," Guerin added. "We played them well. We just
lost it on a bad break at the end. You always try to take
positives from any game, but you have to face facts. We lost and
we've got to start winning."
Ottawa played its 200th game at the Corel Centre, improving to
92-73-35. The Senators have won two straight following a
four-game losing streak and remained tied with Toronto atop the
Eastern Conference.
"The Bruins fought hard," Lalime said. "They're a team with a
lot of heart and in a game like that, you expect them to be
there at the end."
Ottawa has 26 points, matching the 1998-99 club for the best
20-game total in franchise history.
