Conroy, Iginla help Flames knot Senators
OTTAWA -- Down two goals with less than 14 minutes to play, the Calgary
Flames never doubted they could come back.
Craig Conroy scored twice and assisted on Jarome Iginla's game-tying
goal with 10:38 remaining in regulation as Calgary tied the Ottawa
Senators 4-4 Thursday night.
"We knew it wasn't over," Conroy said. "We looked up, and there was a
lot of time left. And the way we've been going, we've been able to come
back.
"We've done it two or three times," he added, "so we just settled down
and played our game. We got back to the basics, said, 'Hey, there'll be
no more against us,' and just went from there."
Conroy, who opened the scoring at 5:42 of the first, scored his ninth
of the season 6:25 into the third to draw the Flames to within one,
just 39 seconds after Chris Phillips scored his second of the game to
put Ottawa ahead 4-2.
"We were pretty calm on the bench," Iginla said. "We didn't get too
down and we stuck with it. It got away from us a bit. You've got to
give Ottawa credit, too. They're playing at home, they're playing great
right now, and they really pushed it to start the third, but I thought
we kept our composure and battled back."
Iginla tied the game at 9:22 when he tipped Dean McAmmond's shot past
goalie Patrick Lalime for his league-leading 19th goal of the season.
"I was just standing in front hoping that it came," Iginla said. "Dean
let a good shot go and it just went off my glove and into the net. I
didn't want to celebrate. I didn't know if they would review it or not."
Iginla also assisted on both of Conroy's goals to extend his
league-best scoring streak to 15 games.
"At the start of each game I'm just trying to prepare mentally --
trying to be ready to go and help the team win," Iginla said. "At the
end of the day, hopefully we get a win, and hopefully the streak keeps
going."
The tie allowed both teams to extend lengthy unbeaten streaks.
Ottawa tied a team record by extending its league-best streak to 11
games.
Calgary's 10-game streak is the second-longest in the NHL this season.
"I think they outwork a lot of teams and win that way, and that's been
our success, too, lately," Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson said. "I
think that's why we saw a draw tonight. Both teams competed really hard
for 60 minutes, and both teams are playing good hockey."
Calgary held a 31-29 edge in shots, including a 6-5 margin in overtime.
"We had some chances to win it and they had some chances," Conroy said.
"It was a great game for the fans."
After Conroy's first goal put Calgary up 1-0, Martin Havlat scored his
ninth on a wrist shot from the slot that trickled through Roman Turek's
pads and over the goal line to tie the game 7:25 into the first.
Rob Niedermayer scored his first goal in 16 games 2:58 into the second
to restore the Flames' one-goal lead.
Phillips scored his first goal since Oct. 25 at 8:56 to tie the game at
2 and Alfredsson gave Ottawa its first lead of the game with his 11th
goal 1:45 into the third.
Phillips added his second of the game on a power-play at 5:46.
"It's been a while since I scored, and to get two, I'm pretty happy
about that, but it would have been nice to get a win along with them,"
Phillips said.
