Game Story

KANATA, Ontario (Ticker) -- Rookie Martin Havlat scored twice
and the Ottawa Senators remained red hot with a 4-2 victory over
the Calgary Flames.

Returning from a shoulder injury that forced him to miss eight
games, the 20-year-old Havlat scored 9:43 into the opening
period and completed his first career multi-goal game with 16:18
left in the second.

"I missed eight games. I don't like watching from the press box
or on TV, so it is nice to come back and have a big game," said
Havlat, who has 15 points in 22 games.

"He was very anxious and enthusiastic about coming back, and it
really showed tonight," Senators coach Jacques Martin said. "His
flare adds an extra dimension to our team and when our younger
players can contribute offensively it takes a load off of our
veterans."

Radek Bonk also scored in the first period and Andreas Dackell
added an empty-net goal for the Senators, who have won six of
their last seven games to tie Toronto atop the Eastern
Conference standings with 40 points.

Ottawa improved to 10-3-3-0 at home and has not lost at the
Corel Centre since a 5-3 defeat to Edmonton on November 23.

Cory Stillman and Valeri Bure tallied for Calgary, which failed
in its bid to win three straight road games for the first time
since a four-game run from February 9-March 9, 1999.

Coming off Wednesday's victory at Montreal, the Flames wasted
little time in falling behind as Ottawa's top line produced 60
seconds into the game.

Bonk converted a 2-on-1, taking a pass from Marian Hossa and
wristing the puck through goaltender Fred Brathwaite's pads for
his 11th goal.

"It's very frustrating the way it started out," Brathwaite said.
"Ottawa is a skilled team. We knew we couldn't get behind on
them. We wanted to come out strong and play with the lead.
Unfortunately, they are a very strong team and tough to come
back on. We found our legs a little too late."

Havlat provided a two-goal cushion with 10:17 left in the first
period. Vaclav Prospal's shot from the left faceoff circle
caromed off the end boards to Havlat behind the net, where he
made a quick move before tucking the puck past Brathwaite for
his seventh goal.

Calgary got back into the contest just under eight minutes later
while on the power play. Stillman unleashed a slap shot from
the right point and the puck found its way through traffic and a
screened Patrick Lalime for his 11th goal.

Havlat struck again early in the second period, converting a
3-on-1 when he snapped the puck past Brathwaite to give Ottawa a
3-1 advantage.

Bure, a major disappointment after scoring 35 goals last season,
tried to make things interesting when he scored his fifth goal
of the season and second in as many nights with 4:57 remaining
in the contest.

But Dackell sealed the contest when he scored his eighth goal
into an empty net with six seconds to play.
