Game Story
KANATA, Ontario (Ticker) -- Patrick Lalime posted his 10th
career shutout in his 10th straight start, leading the Ottawa
Senators to their fourth consecutive win, a 6-0 rout of the
floundering New York Islanders.
Lalime stopped 26 shots for his fourth shutout of the season,
moving into a tie for second in the league.
"All games are a challenge," Lalime said. "We played a nice
team game. The guys were taking rebounds away and limiting
scoring chances. Their best one was a shot by (Bill) Muckalt
that went off my mask."
With less than 10 minutes to play and the Islanders on a power
play, New York's best chance to get on the board was a weak
backhander Muckalt tossed in a flurry that Lalime kicked out.
Lalime improved to 8-2 in his last 10 games. Ottawa controlled
the game from the start. Six different players scored for the
Senators, who have won seven of their last eight contests and
are 13-1-5 in the last 19 meetings with the Islanders.
"It's the type of game where you're glad it's over and you get
out of it with no injuries," Senators coach Jacques Martin said.
Ottawa matched a season high offensively, getting things started
with a three-goal first period. Rob Zamuner scored the only
goal Lalime needed 7:16 into the game and Daniel Alfredsson and
Alexei Yashin tallied 57 seconds apart late in the opening
period.
Ottawa moved into first place in the Eastern Conference with 42
points.
Yashin got the game's only power-play goal, tallying 15 seconds
into a two-man advantage. His bad-angle wrist shot deflected
off a defender's skate and bounced over goaltender John
Vanbiesbrouck's left shoulder.
Yashin has 35 points in 24 games against New York.
"I'm not happy anytime we lose 6-0," Islanders coach Butch
Goring said. "We're not running and hiding, we played hard
until the end of the game. It's frustrating. You start to
wonder if there's any light at the end of the tunnel. I'll
carry these guys on my back if I have to."
Ottawa got two more quick goals in the second period. Rookie
Petr Schastlivy scored his second of the season off a faceoff,
wristing the puck by a screened Vanbiesbrouck. Just 18 seconds
later, Rico Persson passed to former Islander Jamie Rivers,
whose slap shot went off the skate of New York winger Oleg
Kvasha and slid past Vanbiesbrouck's stick side for a 5-0
cushion.
It was Rivers' first goal of the season.
Wade Flaherty came on after Vanbiesbrouck surrendered five goals
on 15 shots.
"I would have liked to have tried and stayed in the game a
little longer," Vanbiesbrouck said. "But they got bounces like
their third goal that went off (Kenny) Jonsson's stick. It's no
secret they're an elite team with young guys who are coming of
age. Not only are they disciplined defensively but offensively
as well."
Vaclav Prospal put a quick wrist shot inside the post and past
Flaherty 14:46 into the third period for his first goal of the
season, capping the scoring.
"Of course it felt great to score," Prospal said. "I broke 20
last season and that was my goal going into this year. Last year
I got most of my goals after Christmas. I can do it again this
year."
Early in the second, the Islanders lost rookie Jason Krog to a
left shoulder injury after he was hit behind the net by Ottawa
defenseman Karel Rachunek and fell into the boards.
The Islanders fell to 2-5-2 in the second game when playing on
back-to-back nights. There were coming off Friday's 3-2 victory
over Toronto but have lost four of five and are 3-12-2-1 in the
last 18 games.
New York was shut out for the sixth time this season.
"You may hear lots of different things," Flaherty said. "But
I'm happy and proud to be a part of the Islander organization."
