Game Story

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- Jamie Heward and Serge Aubin scored
third-period goals as the Columbus Blue Jackets rallied for a
3-3 tie with the Ottawa Senators.

Just over a minute after Heward's power-play goal, Kevin Dineen
passed from the left faceoff circle to Aubin, who shoveled a
backhander past goaltender Jani Hurme with 14:48 remaining.

Both teams registered two shots in overtime. Tyler Wright had
the best chance for Columbus, but Hurme made a chest save on his
slap shot from the right circle with five seconds left.

Earlier, Alexei Yashin drove a wrist shot from the slot for
Ottawa, but Ron Tugnutt blocked it to perserve the tie. Tugnutt
stopped 23 shots against his former team as the expansion Blue
Jackets moved to 1-2-3 in overtime.

"We only have two ties," Tugnutt said. "Playing those guys and
playing really well like we have is encouraging. They are a
very tough team to play with."

Ottawa is unbeaten in its last six games (4-0-2) and has just
one loss in its last 10 (7-1-2-0).

Hurme made 31 saves in his first start since November 23, but
the Senators are 0-0-2-0 against Columbus and 0-0-6 in overtime.

Marian Hossa had given Ottawa a 3-1 advantage with a power-play
goal 6:58 into the second period. Yashin spotted him unchecked
through traffic and slid the puck onto the stick of Hossa, who
redirected it just inside the right goalpost for the Senators'
third power play goal of the contest.

It was Hossa's 17th goal of the season and Yashin's second
assist in the period.

"We've been struggling on the power play, but I'm glad we got
three goals today," Yashin said. "We can build confidence for
the future. In the long run, we just have to build our
confidence. We can't make the mistakes we made tonight and
expect to win."

While Ottawa was 3-for-6 on the power play, Columbus managed
just one goal in nine chances. The Senators were ranked 20th on
the power play entering the game, while Columbus was tied for
23rd in penalty-killing.

The nine power-play chances were the most the Blue Jackets have
had since going 0-for-11 against San Jose.

The Blue Jackets' comeback started 3:50 into the third period
during a two-man advantage. Espen Knutsen and rookie Petteri
Nummelin were able to keep the puck in Ottawa's zone. Nummelin's
shot from top of the circle deflected to Heward, whose one-timer
sailed through Hurme's pads.

All five of Heward's goals this season have come on the power
play.

"I hope that we can continue to build on this," said Knutsen,
who extended his points streak to five games. "We played much
better in the second and third periods and kept the pressure on
them."

It was Columbus' 21st power-play goal and second on a 5-on-3
advantage. But the Blue Jackets surrendered three power-play
goals for the third time.

With the Blue Jackets trailing, 1-0, Wright went to the penalty
box for elbowing 18 seconds into the second period. Just 76
seconds later, Shawn McEachern took a feed from Yashin and
one-timed a slap shot over Tugnutt's arm for his 10th goal.

Jason York struck at 5:45 of the opening period with the game's
first power-play goal. Positioned alone at the hashmarks, he
fired a slapper through traffic to give the Senators an early
lead.

Rookie center Chris Nielsen assisted on the Blue Jackets' first
goal, giving him four points in as many games since he was
recalled from the minors.
