Game Story

KANATA, Ontario (Ticker) -- Tony Amonte scored twice, including
the go-ahead goal on the power play with 6:44 left in the second
period, as the Chicago Blackhawks posted a 3-2 victory over the
Ottawa Senators.

Looking to extend their unbeaten streak to seven games, the
Senators had a 2-1 lead early in the second period following
Daniel Alfredsson's second goal of the contest.

But Amonte scored at 9:51 of the second to tie it and added his
17th goal of the season just over three minutes later to put the
Blackhawks ahead for good.

"We're playing with confidence right now, but confidence can go
both ways," Amonte said. "It wasn't the greatest game. There
wasn't enough puck control, but we did manage to get the two
points tonight."

Jocelyn Thibault made the lead stand up with 32 saves, stopping
all 10 shots in the third period.

Alexei Zhamnov scored in the first period for the Blackhawks,
who have won a season-high three straight games following a
five-game skid.

"We tried to set small goals and one of them was to get 30
points by Christmas," Blackhawks coach Alpo Suhonen said. "It
helps to achieve these goals when we have won the last three
games."

Playing their best hockey of the season, the Blackhawks jumped
on top with 6:47 left in the opening period. Enforcer Bob
Probert picked up a loose puck at the blue line and flipped a
shot at the net that Zhamnov redirected past goaltender Patrick
Lalime for his 11th goal.

But the Senators, who carried the play throughout the first 20
minutes, tied it with 44 seconds left in the period. Thibault
stopped Alexei Yashin's backhander, but Alfredsson was there to
put home the rebound for his sixth goal.

Ottawa had a 14-5 advantage in shots in the period.

Alfredsson gave the Senators the lead 5:04 into the middle
period when he wristed a shot from the high slot that found its
way past a screened Thibault.

Probert, who entered with just four points in 31 games, helped
set up Amonte's first goal of the game with 10:09 left in the
second. Amonte took a pass from Probert in the slot and wristed
a shot between Lalime's pads for his 16th goal.

"We haven't been getting the breaks lately, but we've managesd
to string together some wins and it's important to be able to go
in the Christmas like this," Probert said.

With rookie Petr Schastlivy serving a penalty for
cross-checking, the Blackhawks cashed in on the power play to
take the lead for good later in the second period.

Lalime stopped defenseman Boris Mironov's shot from down low,
but the puck bounced to Amonte just to the left of the crease,
where he tapped it home to complete his fourth multi-goal game
of the season.

"Teams like Columbus, Minnesota and Chicago aren't going to give
points away," Lalime said. "On paper, we should win, but when
you step on the ice, things change. We have to change that next
game."

The Senators garnered 10 of the 13 shots in the third period but
could not tie it. Thibault's best save came on rookie Martin
Havlat with just over five minutes remaining when he made a pad
stop on a slap shot from the left faceoff circle.
