Montreal sets team record with just 12 shots
OTTAWA (AP) -- The Ottawa Senators finally wore down Jose Theodore.
Marian Hossa scored 50 seconds into overtime, after Mike Fisher
scored with 45.7 seconds left in regulation to give the Ottawa Senators
a 3-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday night.
The Senators had outshot the Canadiens 32-11 before Fisher's goal sent
the game into overtime by putting Martin Havlat's rebound past Theodore.
"We've been in that position before in Montreal, where we had tons of
shots and they beat us," Fisher said. "Even last time they were in
here, they got a late goal to beat us and we kind of had that on our
minds. We played hard throughout for 60 minutes and I thought we got
rewarded for our hard work."
Hossa completed Ottawa's comeback in overtime when he sped past
stumbling Canadiens defenseman Patrice Brisebois before backhanding a
shot over Theodore's right shoulder for his 21st goal of the season.
"He kept us in this game," Canadiens defenseman Craig Rivet said of
Theodore, who finished with 36 saves. "It was very unfortunate that
they did score that tying goal, and the overtime goal, but we need to
help him out a little."
Montreal set a team record with just 12 shots in the game -- including
only one in overtime. The Canadiens had 13 shots in Monday's 3-1 loss
to the Islanders in New York on Monday, tying the team's previous low
for the fifth time since 1955.
"It's concerning when you only have 11 or 12 shots on net," Canadiens
defenseman Craig Rivet said. "You're not going to win a lot of hockey
games when you only have 12 shots on net so that's something we're
going to have to address."
Zdeno Chara also scored for the Senators, who are 5-0-1 since a 3-2
loss to Montreal on Dec. 16. Ottawa has lost just twice in its last 23
games (17-2-4).
"It's a great record, and I think we thrive on it, too," Senators
captain Daniel Alfredsson said. "But we know it's a long year. We've
been playing a lot of games lately so hopefully we can stay pretty
fresh and keep going here."
Yanic Perreault scored goals 52 seconds apart late in the second period
for Montreal, which was outshot 39-12 overall while losing its second
straight.
"Right now, we're not using our speed like we should be using our
speed," Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said. "We should be skating a
lot better. There are some adjustments to be made, and we're going to
make those adjustments."
Perreault's first goal made the score 1-1 with 3:17 left in the second.
Perreault, who scored with 17.8 seconds left in the third to beat the
Senators 11 days earlier, added his 19th on the next shot of the game
with 2:25 left in the period.
Theodore stuck out his left leg to make a pad save on Fisher's
power-play chance midway through the first as the Senators failed to
convert any of its three power-play opportunities in the period.
Chara opened the scoring with 2:35 left in the first period as he drove
to the net and slid the puck around Theodore.
Outshot 14-3 in the first, Montreal managed just one shot in the first
10 minutes of the second as Ottawa held a 22-4 lead in shots midway
through the game.
