Game Story
BUFFALO, New York (Ticker) -- Nothing builds confidence like a
shutout.
Pulled from two of his previous five starts, Dominik Hasek made
34 saves for his fourth shutout of the season as the Buffalo
Sabres recorded a 2-0 blanking of the slumping Ottawa Senators.
Hasek had split his previous 10 decisions and was 0-5-4 in his
last nine games against Ottawa. But he stopped 20 shots in the
second period and 12 in the third to nail down his 49th career
shutout and fifth vs. the Senators.
"In the past, when he is criticized for effort, he always comes
in with a big game," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said of his
goaltender. "You could see the focus. He looked sharp right
from the start."
Hasek also had a little luck as John Emmons ripped a 25-footer
off the left goalpost with 7:08 left in the second period and
Marian Hossa put a point-blank wrist shot off the right post 4
1/2 minutes later.
"I don't think I was more concentrating than the last game. It
was a special game for me because the pressure, because I got
pulled out of the last game," Hasek said. "However, I can't say
that I was any more (concentrated) than the last game."
Vaclav Varada scored the only goal Hasek needed in the first
period and Miroslav Satan added an insurance tally in the third
as Buffalo climbed within two points of first-place Ottawa in
the Northeast Division.
"I liked the way my teammates played in front of me. I could
see lots of shots," Hasek said. "It helps my goal, which is to
put a couple games like that together."
Patrick Lalime made 17 saves for the Senators, who have lost
three in a row and are winless in a season-high five straight
games (0-3-2). Ottawa fell to 7-2-1 against Northeast Division
foes.
"We have to keep it simple," said Senators captain Daniel
Alfredsson. "Tonight we created chances, but we ran into a hot
goaltender. We just have to stick with it if we play as hard as
we did tonight."
Varada got his second goal in as many games 8:16 into the
contest. On the game's first shot, he beat Lalime with a slap
shot from the top of the left faceoff circle for his seventh of
the season.
"There was a loose puck between the blue line and the red line
and I just picked it up," Varada said. "I knew I had no one to
pass to, I just took a shot and it went in."
"He did not have a good angle at all," said Alfredsson. "It
looked to me like it was a little sinker. It was a pretty good
shot, but it was a little fluky."
Ottawa managed only two shots in the opening period but
multiplied that tenfold in the second. Hasek denied Radek Bonk
on a point-blank backhander with 14:40 left in the period and
stopped Andre Roy's one-timer from the low slot off a pass from
rookie Martin Havlat.
"I guess with a goalie like Hasek you have to get more traffic
to score on him, that's the bottom line," Hossa said. "We
outshooot them in the second period, but we couldn't put it in
there. We hit the post (two) times, but that's what a good
goalie gives."
Satan gave Buffalo some insurance 5:32 into the third. J.P.
Dumont got by Ottawa's Alexei Yashin in the neutral zone and got
off a shot from the left side. Shawn McEachern could not clear
a bouncing puck and Satan roofed a shot from in front of the net
for his 12th goal.
"The second goal, he picked his corner, he had some time,"
Alfredsson said. "That was a bad turnover by us."
