Alfredsson, Hossa each score twice in Sens' win over Pens

PITTSBURGH -- Marian Hossa and Daniel Alfredsson made themselves right at home at Mellon Arena.

Hossa and Alfredsson each scored two goals as Ottawa beat the slumping Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 on Saturday night, the Senators' third victory in 23 games in Pittsburgh.

"We talked about this building before the game and how we always have a tough time winning here," Hossa said. "I don't know why that was, but finally we came out and played hard and won this game."

The Senators also discussed losing back-to-back games to the Penguins in October.

"It was something we had on our minds tonight," goalie Patrick Lalime said. "Lucky for us, Mario Lemieux was not in tonight. That probably helped, but I thought we dominated that game from the first to the last minute."

Lemieux missed his 19th consecutive game with a hip injury. The Penguins, also without forward Martin Straka (broken leg), are 1-6-2 since a three-game winning streak from Dec. 4-8.

"We're making too many mistakes at the wrong time," Penguins coach Rick Kehoe said. "We're not scoring a lot of goals so we can't make those mistakes. We make mistakes and they wind up in our net."

Hossa had his third two-goal game of the season and raised his season total to 14. His first goal, at 19:24 of the first period, broke a 1-1 tie and put the Senators ahead to stay.

Hossa then scored on a power play at 2:56 of the second. He was credited with the goal when his centering pass deflected in off Pittsburgh defenseman Josef Melichar's skate for a 3-1 lead.

Dan Lacouture scored shorthanded for the Penguins at 4:40 of the second period, sweeping a shot past Lalime's glove as he was knocked to his knees.

At 1:57 of the third, Hossa and Radek Bonk worked a two-on-one after Pittsburgh's Alexei Kovalev turned the puck over in the neutral zone. Goalie Johan Hedberg overplayed the shooter; Bonk waited for an opening and then put a shot around Hedberg to make it 4-2.

"He made a great play," Hedberg said. "I thought I had him for sure. He held it, held it, held it. I didn't think he had an angle but apparently he did. There couldn't have been much. He made a great play."

Alfredsson scored his 17th goal at 7:07 of the first period.

He got his 18th on a two-on-one at 16:15 of the third, putting a shot just under the crossbar.

Tom Kostopoulos scored on his first NHL shot at 7:32 of the first period for the Penguins.

The Senators lost left winger Petr Schastlivy to a right knee injury after a first-period collision with Jan Hrdina.

"It doesn't look good," coach Jacques Martin said. "It looks pretty severe, unfortunately."

Schastlivy, 22, was just recalled from Grand Rapids and had an assist on Alfredsson's first goal.

Notes: Bonk has five points in his last two games. ... The Senators are 15-1-1-0 when they lead after two periods. ... Penguins forward Kevin Stevens has gone 21 games without a goal. His only goal this season came on Oct. 23. ... Kostopoulos, a seventh-round draft pick in 1999, was recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL when former No. 1 pick Milan Kraft was demoted.
