Game Story
PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The sequel was just as good as the
original.
In his second game back from retirement, Mario Lemieux set up
one milestone and reached another as the Pittsburgh Penguins
defeated the reeling Ottawa Senators, 5-3.
Lemieux assisted on a pair of goals by Jaromir Jagr. The first
was Jagr's 1,000th career point and the second Lemieux's
1,500th.
The 10th player in NHL history to reach 1,500 points, Lemieux
capped the scoring with an empty-netter and finished with a goal
and three assists.
"It's always special when you reach a milestone," he said. "Your
teammates are a special part of it. I was just trying to do my
best as a player."
On Wednesday, the Hall of Famer and Penguins' owner had a goal
and two assists during a stirring 5-0 win over Toronto in his
first game since 1997.
"I prepared myself to play hard for the last two months," he
said.
Prospering from Lemieux's return, Jagr scored the tying and
go-ahead goals tonight. He also assisted on Lemieux's, giving
him four goals and three assists in the last two games.
"The only thing that is important is that people in the
organization understand, to be able to have 68 on the ice has
been a big part," Lemieux said, referring to Jagr.
More importantly, the Penguins are 2-0 with Lemieux in the
lineup and have three straight victories for the first time in
more than six weeks.
"I think especially on power plays we are going to be even more
dangerous," Jagr said.
Pittsburgh fought back from a trio of deficits, taking the lead
for good, 4-3, on Jagr's second goal of the night 88 seconds
into the third period.
Rene Corbet fed Lemieux with a clever no-look pass from behind
the net. From the bottom of the right faceoff circle, Lemieux
drew the attention of rookie goaltender Jani Hurme and fed Jagr
for a one-timer in the low slot.
Jagr had tied it at 3-3 with 14:05 left in the second when he
picked up a rebound of Lemieux's bad-angle shot and put it past
Hurme for his 1,000th point.
"I'm glad I reached 1,000, glad for Mario," said Jagr, who has
411 goals and 591 assists in 763 NHL games -- all with
Pittsburgh.
Lemieux finished the scoring with 13 seconds left when he spun
off a defender on the left side and backhanded a shot into the
empty net from the bottom of the circle.
Robert Lang and Janne Laukkanen also scored for the Penguins,
who have 15 goals during their three-game winning streak after
totaling 14 during an 0-3-3 skid.
The Senators have lost four in a row and are winless in six
games (0-4-2) after a four-game winning streak and 7-1-0 run.
"We didn't make a strong effort," coach Jacques Martin said.
"You can't do that, especially with men like Jagr and Lemieux in
the game."
Ottawa opened the scoring 96 seconds into the game on rookie
Petr Schastlivy's third goal. But midway through the period,
Lemieux directed a power play and Lang cashed in for his 13th
goal.
Just 2:13 later, Alexei Yashin scored his 10th, beating Penguins
goaltender Garth Snow with a snap shot from the left faceoff
dot.
With six seconds left in the first, Laukkanen capitalized on a
brilliant individual effort by Martin Straka, banging home his
first goal of the season after Straka broke through a pair of
defensemen and put a shot off the right goalpost while falling
to he ice.
The Senators took their final lead 3:49 into the second when
rookie Martin Havlat scored on the power play.
